baby,
the big hand on my square yellow clock points to 7, while the small one, 2. i've lost count of the repetitive number of times i've brought both palms of my hands and rubbed them either against my cheeks, neck, thighs or together. it's so cold!! it's been raining non stop since 10 in the morning yet i wonder why the fan speed setting in my room remains foolishly set at 4. when it's cold i like to think about three things : classic hot chocolate, warm blanket, you. as in "How nice it would be to wrap me and you with a big warm blanket and have a venti cup of classic hot chocolate to share between us, with just enough whip cream and extra chocolate powder!". maybe that's the reason why the fan speed was left undisturbed. i want to keep it cold in here so i would be constantly reminded about you. i went back home during recess because the pmr examinations are on and i had no worthwhile classes on for the entire day. teachers made me their messenger girl in the meantime so i had to be energetic, running errands against a laid back, chilly, cloudy weather. i wanted to be productive once home but i couldn't help myself from crawling into my bed once i heard the start of raindrops falling outside my window. everyone knows that's the best weather to sleep in! especially fulfilling on monday mornings. but once in bed i did something different, i pulled the blanket over my head, hiding both face and body from the cold. completely blocking sense of sight. and you know how they say that when one sense is down, the others become more sensitive. i became distracted from my sleep because i was listening attentively to the rhythm of the falling rain. *drip* i was upset yesterday when i saw that you were getting wet waiting outside my house *drop* i once put a wet umbrella inside my bag after we used it to get to parade. it made my burger king coupons damp *drip* i once borrowed you a spoiled umbrella to go home with. one of the small yellow ones *drop* we first played that "avoid the kiss" game outside parade under that umbrella *drip* we once shared a kiss under the umbrella when it was raining in ss15. we broke apart immediately because we noticed there was an occupied car parked right next to us. *drop* we weren't used to huddling very close under the umbrella in the beginning. and the umbrella is generally too small for two people. i remember you once used my black shawl to try to protect me from the rain in case i was getting wet *drip* in the beginning, when we worked together there was a heavy heavy rain outside carrefour. we began mass producing starbucks signature hot chocolate and started sampling the warm comforting beverage around outside the store to the people who came in wet from the rain and to the people who waited with agony for the rain to subside the rain finally stopped. i'm hoping you can come home dry quick so i can finally chat with you again love, your fern Wednesday, September 26, 2007
after an incredibly hectic week of half curled ribbons strewn across the floor, little pieces of scrap cardboard stuck on bare heels, little messages of unrequitted love, and an embarrasing response from the masses after our marketing efforts - thanks to the 6th form society fund raising project. i really thought that if i ever even saw a peek of the loud! multi coloured! little lanterns again, they'd be out the window shredded into itsy bitsy pieces in 10 seconds flat. Grrrrr!!! but then again which sane child could resist the warm glowing flame these little lanterns emit

just the other day, whilst wilson and i were off to fetch a cake along the streets of ss15, a man standing opposite a clinic stepped right up to him quite alarmingly and suddenly a rush of chinese words escaped him. being the banana i am (unable to comprehend the chinese language) i was surprised of course and did not understand the situation at hand. he was pretty aged, probably around 60 carrying a mass of white hair which had only began it's balding process. he wore decent clothes although not grand nor new, looked clean. he was also clutching his stomache aggresively and wore a look of agony on his face. between his rapid speech of cantonese i caught some familiar sounds like "gastric" and "station" wilson's hand made a move to his back pocket where his wallet was kept. i searched his face for an explanation, assuming that the man had gastric and wanted money to buy food but only had enough for his station ticket. My assumption wasn't far off, but wilson's answer included the fact that the man needed a specific rm6.70 for his train ticket back home where his gastric medication was left. we decided to both split and share the amount to give to the man who was now moaning and slightly crouched on his back, still aggresively clutching his tummy. Since the bakery was just next door, i thought the rational thing to do would be to get him some food to calm the unforgiving pain in his abdomen. but no sooner had he recieved the money, the man mumbled a thanks, stood up straight, turned his heels and took fast strides away from us. the direction he was heading to quite opposite from where the nearest station was. wilson wore a frown on his face. "you think he's a scam?" i nudged him "i'm not sure.." back in the bakery "arrghhh... can't stand getting conned!" you see, i've been regularly attending the dharma talk in my school's buddhist society lately. so i preached to him "it's alright, as long as you had good intentions you gained good karma and are one step closer to becoming a buddha" seriously he cheered up for abit until on his way home he encountered the same experience. "i was on the bus when a guy approached me for rm2 for the bus ticket. i only had rm1 spare change so i gave him that and he took it and hopped off the bus" i blame your blur innocent face wilson x) which brings us to this question - is it wise to be generous? or is it worth practising generousity at all in a corrupt world which WILL take advantage of your generousity. the streets have been littered with "charity" collectors lately and this is not an exaggeration. Some might be genuine but most are just out there for the money. even if they do carry an official logo from a society, chances are only 10% of your rm10 (isn't that their standard donation price??)(ps: that's only rm1!!) will go to mentioned home while 90% will go to paying the people who have collected the money, done the paperwork, collaborated/ pocket it for themselves. no one's sure are they? and the worse part is that it's legal. many societies agree to getting 10% of collected donations because it's far better than not getting anything. and quite personally, to me rm10 is quite a figure to be given out on a daily basis (because i do meet donation collectors on a daily basis) but only rm1 will reach back to the society.
jinweng relates this incident when he was out with his friends where a similiar situation 1 hit him. the guy asked for rm5.20, but when only rm3 was recieved he actually threw a fit and rejected the money why is generousity being measured with wealth? last year wawan and i were in parade riding on an escalator. a man chased us up the moving steps, bearing the official logo of the spastic society complete with pamphlets and all. he would return a spastic society sticker to us with every rm10 donation that we make. wawan and i looked at each other and each pulled out a rm1 note from our respective wallets. we then said we weren't interested in the sticker but would like to offer what we could afford to help the society. the man actually rejected our offering and again pressed for exactly rm10. when we declined (because again rm10 isn't exactly easy to come buy. i was just a student then. even if i was a barista it was 2 hours of work thanks) he pulled a sour face and we went our seperate ways. i have then since learned and experienced the many scams in our living world. gosh have you read about the newspaper article regarding the bogus beggar who would earn hundreds a night just by begging along the streets? he was driving a BMW!! i'm not asking everyone to start scrooging on the needy. but just be aware of where your goodwill money is going to. instead of paying commisioned collectors or buying rm10 ball pens, choose a society of your choice to contribute to and pay personal visits to make your donation so at the same time you could volounteer and feel like a billion bucks by the end of the day or at least make sure you know you can trust the association. our dharma speaker trusts the sjbca (the association of the temple beside summit) while i trusts schools and interact/leo societies mainly because i myself have been involved in a donation collection for the SPCA (society of prevention of cruelty to animals) before and 100% of it went to the society. i made a resolution to only donate to beggars who are old or clearly disabled (eg: missing limbs etc) because the strong young men out there in the streets can still work to make an honest living! those drunkards waste their money on drugs and booze anyway so if you really do want to help, buy them food like curry puffs or a simple pack of nasi lemak or even hot steaming pao's to nourish their hungry souls. yesterday we learned from the dharma speaker that : even the most high ranking noble monks will rather go out to the streets to beg for their food, to give a convenient chance to society to do some good karma but again this works to the advantage of some unfaithful people. so..
HOW TO AVOID DONATING TO BOGUS MONKS
real monks - 1. they only accept FOOD offerings. 2. reject money if you even try giving it to them 3. do not eat, therefore must not be spotted begging, after noon 4. must never ever take off their robe. they can wear a t-shirt underneath or jacket on top to ward off the cold but it takes an official ceremony to disrobe a monk. 5. do not drive. especially fancy cars. 6. will not try to sell you good luck talismans or read your fortune in return for a donation. earning material gain out of religion is very against buddhism this is a society message from fern :) have a nice day
